The Trust for Social Achievement
The Trust for Social Achievement (TSA) is a nonprofit, grant-making organization dedicated to reducing poverty and decreasing achievement gaps. TSA is dedicated to helping people reach their full potential and works to create opportunities for disadvantaged groups, with a focus on the Roma, 72% of whom live below the poverty line. Toward that end, TSA supports activities in four program areas: First Foundation, Early Learning and Care, Educational Achievement, and Family Economic Success. As a pioneer and incubator for new approaches and ideas, TSA identifies gaps and obstacles to human development and tests possible solutions. The organization emphasizes rigorous evaluation and demonstration of “what works” so that lessons learned can be delivered to key stakeholders to inform public policy and to achieve greater scale. TSA also builds the capacity of local organizations and builds networks and alliances around issues of key importance to achieve greater sustainability and long-term change.

Teach For Bulgaria
Teach for Bulgaria is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to improving access to quality education for every child in Bulgaria. Over forty percent of 15-year-olds in Bulgaria are functionally illiterate, meaning they are unable to apply subject knowledge taught at school to real-life situations. The achievement gap is widening, with Bulgaria demonstrating the highest educational inequality in Europe. Further, students from marginalized groups and poor communities are overrepresented in these statistics, as the current educational system allows children living in rural areas to fall behind their peers in large cities by up to three years. Meanwhile, few teachers are prepared and motivated to effectively support these students, with low numbers of young teachers deciding to work within this challenging context (currently the average age of teachers in Bulgaria is 55.)
In response, Teach for Bulgaria places motivated, trained, and supported teachers in schools where underachieving students have received only limited support and encouragement in the past and where student motivation for learning is dwindling. In 2020, Teach For Bulgaria will also expand its programs to include “Model Schools”, which will be specifically designed to train and support school teams across the country. Teach for Bulgaria’s efforts transcend the classroom and school, as the organization works to spread best practices in education throughout the education system in partnership with national and regional public educational authorities.
